Rebranding and Motion Template Creation

Arrow Icon

Creating aesthetically pleasing motion graphics for a YouTube format is a complex task. Not only do you have to design animated graphics that align with the brand and its audience, but they also need to be responsive, adapting to the story you want to tell.

For "Lohnt Sich Das?", a weekly German YouTube series that delves into people's lives and careers, the focus lies in graphics that provide a detailed view of the protagonists' income and expenditures. For the new season, I had the opportunity to undertake a complete rebranding (and coding) of all animation templates - a total of 10!

Among them, the most intricate one is undoubtedly a comprehensive bar graph displayed at the end of each episode. This graph is split into a variable number of parts to illustrate the protagonist's spendings and surplus. What's new in this graphic is an additional section highlighting the protagonist's income when they have multiple sources of revenue, along with a potential investment strategy.

Under the hood, nearly everything is based on a single shape layer, consisting of 31 shape groups, complemented by a staggering 145 (!) custom fx layers to manipulate the shape.

Rebranding and Motion Template Creation

The process encompassed more than just the creation of motion graphics; it also involved an extensive research phase. Here's how it unfolded:

First, we scrutinized the prevailing graphic elements to discern their efficacy and reasons for success, as well as to identify any visual shortcomings. We delved into the existing motion graphics to assess how they contributed to the narrative.

Subsequently, we conducted qualitative interviews with the production and editorial teams, gaining valuable insights into their daily workflows. We explored how they interacted with the existing templates and the challenges they encountered. We also sought to learn from similar formats, if applicable.

The insights gathered from these interviews were meticulously analyzed, allowing us to identify the most recurrent issues.

Finally, after multiple iterations of prototyping, testing, and fine-tuning, we successfully integrated all 10 templates into the post-production timeline.
